NARA, Japan, July 8 (Reuters) - Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the longest-serving leader of modern Japan, was gunned down on Friday while campaigning for a parliamentary election, shocking a country wherepolitical violence had become almost unthinkable.

Abe, 67, was pronounced dead around five and a half hours after the shooter opened fire on him from behind as he spoke to members of the public from a drab traffic island in the western city of Nara. Authorities arrested a 41-year-old man. Japanese media reported that the weapon appeared to be a homemade gun.

Mr. Shinzo Abe was a true friend of India and a very tall leader by any standard. He stood by India through thick and thin.  May God give Mr. Abe the strength to overcome this challenge at this gravest hour of distress. We all Indians hope and pray for his life.

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a telegram of condolences to Shinzo Abe's wife and mother.

"The hand of a criminal cut short the life of an outstanding statesman who headed the Japanese government for a long time and did a lot to develop good neighborly relations between our countries," Putin wrote.

It is worthy of note that India declared national mourning in connection with Shinzo Abe's death.

According to Senator Alexander Bashkin, former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had come very close to restoring friendly relations between Russia and Japan.

According to Bashkin, Japan's new Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has destroyed the relations.

Trump Mourns Death of 'True Friend' Prime Minister Abe. By Sandy Fitzgerald,

"Really BAD NEWS FOR THE WORLD!" Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social. "Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is dead. He was assassinated. His killer was captured and will hopefully be dealt with swiftly and harshly. Few people know what a great man and leader Shinzo Abe was, but history will teach them and be kind. He was a unifier like no other, but above all, he was a man who loved and cherished his magnificent country, Japan. Shinzo Abe will be greatly missed. There will never be another like him! President Donald J. Trump."

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, an ultra-nationalist who served in the post longer than anyone else before stepping down in 2020, was shot and killed on Friday at a campaign rally.

Abe was giving a campaign speech in the city of Nara when he was gunned down around 11.30am
Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, a navy veteran who used a home-made shotgun in the killing, was arrested at the scene and police say he has since confessed to the shooting

The suspect said he bore a grudge against a "specific organisation" and believed Abe was part of it, and that his grudge was not about politics, the police said, adding it was not clear if the unnamed organisation actually existed.

Juli 2022, 17 Uhr: Shinzo Abe's killer says he wanted to kill someone else.

Shinzo Abe dead: Who is Tetsuya Yamagami, the suspected shooter?

Tetsuya Yamagami reportedly told the police he was dissatisfied with Shinzo Abe and wanted to kill him. A witness to the attack claimed he did not attempt to escape after the shooting.
